Cole Turner, also known as Belthazor is a main character of Seeing is Believing, a fanfiction story written by Little_kingsfan2005. He is adapted from the fictional character portrayed on Charmed by Julian McMahon.
As both a demon and a lawyer, 100+-year-old Cole Turner is a formidable opponent. After proving his worth as a demon (despite his human genes), Cole became a mercenary and a member of the Brotherhood of the Thorn as a young man. The Brotherhood, while an order of extremely powerful demons, had very few contacts in the mortal world and decided to send their secret weapon–a ½ demon, ½ human–that would be able to walk in both worlds. After the Great War, the Brotherhood sent Cole to college (posing as a returning G.I.) at Stanford University and then on to law school in Sydney, Australia. Cole graduated from Sydney Law Schoolthird in his class, and was “hired” by Wolfram & Hart as a junior attorney. He spent ten years at their Los Angeles office, before he was recalled to the Underworld to serve the Brotherhood and the Source during World War II.
In the mid-20th century, Cole began a loose partnership with the Seer known as Kyra, and the two worked side-by-side (among other positions) on and off for the next 50 years or so. He has also been in a very casual, non-exclusive relationship with Angelique Dupree, a blonde female darklighter, since his teenage years. Every ten years or so, Cole renewed and updated his law license by shifting the dates on his academic records. In the late 1980s, Cole established a “cover” on Earth by joining the San Francisco District Attorney’s office, and he soon became a top-notch prosecutor.
By 1993, Cole was one of the most powerful demons in the Underworld (ironic, considering his human half). He was approached by Kyra, who had told him of her massive vision and that she was currently planning on altering the future she had seen. She requested that she aid her in the training of 15-year-old Paige Matthews, the ½ witch, ½ whitelighter who was the half-sister of the prophesized Charmed Ones. Never one to turn town a good challenge, Cole joined the Seer in training Paige by teaching her in magic, deception, evasion, thievery and burglary (specifically lock-picking and hot-wiring), the law (and various legal loopholes), and politics. Over time, Cole found himself changing from pure evil to morally ambiguous due to Paige’s influence.
Upon learning that the legendary Belthazor had joined the “Matthews Coven”, the Brotherhood sent one of their mid-level demons, Julisana, to test his loyalty to the Brotherhood. Posing as a paralegal in the District Attorney’s office under the name Julie Barrett, Julisana proved herself to be not only a legal asset to Cole, but a personal one as well. He also made it clear to the Brotherhood that his affiliation with Paige would not impact his duties (as a member of the Brotherhood). Nonetheless, Raynor also sent him Sykes, another half-human, half-demon attorney, and arranged for him to sit “second chair” to Cole for both legal and demonic assistance. While Sykes relished the opportunity to work with his idol and emulate Cole both in the courtroom and in the Underworld, he didn’t possess the moral ambiguity that Cole does, forcing the older man to rein Sykes in more than once. Unfortunately, as Sykes has the backing of Raynor (and a rather public job as an Assistant District Attorney), Cole is unable to get rid of him.
Like Kyra, Cole was one of the first casualties of the Avatars’ Utopia in 1996, but he was revived when the Avatars repaired the damage they’d caused.
Having fallen out of favor with the Source since the formation of the Matthews Coven, Cole threw his support behind Zankou during the latter’s coup d’état; however, he did not actually participate in any combat until the final battle in the Underworld, when he joined the other members of the Matthews Coven. During the Civil War, Cole was finally able to vanquish Sykes, who’d sided with the Source.
Shortly after the Civil War, Cole resigned from the DA’s office and was appointed to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors by the Mayor after his predecessor perished during Zankou’s retreat to Earth. As a San Francisco County Supervisor, Cole has access to more information, resources, and much more political power than he’d ever had as an Assistant District Attorney.
In the fall of 1996, Cole met Phoebe Halliwell, a temp worker assigned to City Hall, and was immediately attracted to the power-bound witch. Despite knowing who she is (Paige’s half-sister and a future Charmed One), Cole asked her out on a date, and the two have since embarked on a romantic relationship.
Cole has a mother, Erzsebet (human name: Elizabeth Turner) a ruthless demon who at one point in her nearly two millennia of life served as a consort of the Source, and an older half-brother, Baldasor, a powerful Upper-level Demon and high-ranking member of the Brotherhood of the Thorn. In 1996, his uncle, Beelzelor, was appointed Ambassador of the newly-created Underworld Consulate in San Francisco.
Superpowers, weapons, and equipment Edit
Despite being ½ demon, ½ human, Cole is a surprisingly powerful Upper-level Demon, who’s powers include:
- Energy balls
- Superhuman strength
He also has high resistance to both physical and magical attacks, and is an expert martial artist, bladesman, and marksman. He drives a Porsche Boxster, and owns a Colt M1911A1 in .45 ACP handgun.
Alternate versions/potential future Edit
In the future of Kyra’s vision, Cole was a prominent member of the Brotherhood of the Thorn until 2000, when he met and fell in love with Phoebe Halliwell, which caused him to vanquish the Triad and betray the Source. He was stripped of his powers in 2001, but was possessed by the essence of the Source of All Evil after he was vanquished by the Charmed Ones. He married Phoebe in 2002, but they divorced after he returned from the Demonic Wasteland. Cole was eventually vanquished once and for all by the Charmed Ones on January 19, 2003 (his 118th birthday), and now lives out his existence in the cosmic void between life and death.
