Here are a list of characters appearing in It’s Time to Duel!

Yugi Mutou, the King of Games Edit

Mutou, yugi

A youngster who grew up playing games by himself, Yugi Mutou is good at games, riddles, and puzzles, especially Duel Monsters.  As a young boy, he received the pieces of the ancient Egyptian artifact called the Millennium Puzzle from his grandfather, Solomon.  After eight years, Yugi finally solved the puzzle at the age of 14, which unknowingly undid a binding spell created by the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Atem, who had sealed the magic of the Shadow Games in the Puzzle and other Millennium Items thousands of years ago in order to stop the victory of the evil demon, Zorc Necrophades.  The Pharaoh had bound the spell with his own name and sealed his own soul within the Millennium Puzzle; when Yugi solved it, both the magic of the Shadow Games and Atem’s soul were released, and Yugi’s body became host to the spirit of Atem, resulting in Yugi gaining another half (which, due to the Pharaoh’s loss of his name, was called Yami Yugi) while changing his life forever.

Yugi earned his title, the King of Games, by competing in and winning various Duel Monsters card tournaments around the world, while also proving adept at various other games, including board games, card games, and even the newly-released Dungeon Dice Monsters game.

Yugi has three very close friends: Joey Wheeler, Tristan Taylor, and Téa Gardner, the latter of whom he has a romantic interest in.  He is friends with Ryou Bakura, and maintains a friendly rivalry with Mai Valentine as well as rivalries with Weevil Underwood, Rex Raptor, and Mako Tsunami.  His greatest rival is Seto Kaiba.

After Atem passed on, Yugi frequently found himself challenged for his title of King of Games by various duelists who felt that without the spirit of the Millennium Puzzle, he would be a pushover.  Kaiba was the first to challenge him, believing that it was the Pharaoh who’d beaten him in the past.  However, Yugi proved to be a worthy opponent and the duel ended in a draw.  He also dueled against his rivals from Duelist Kingdom – Mai Valentine, Weevil Underwood, Rex Raptor, and Mako Tsunami – and won against all of them.  However, he did lose a friendly duel against Joey, Téa, and Tristan, who battled him three-on-one.

Yugi is well-known for being one of the few duelists to assemble the five pieces of Exodia and win a duel.  After losing the Exodia cards on the way to Duelist Kingdom, he has since replaced them; they now hang in a shadow box above the bed in his room alongside the three Egyptian God cards and a copy of the Dark Magician card with alternate art.

When dueling, Yugi uses a Duel Monsters deck well known for the Dark Magician.  At first, his deck is composed of low-level Earth and Dark monsters with Spell and Trap cards to enhance them, with his notable monsters include Dark Magician, Gaia the Fierce Knight, Summoned Skull, Curse of Dragon, Celtic Guardian, and Kuriboh.  As his skills as a duelist improve, so does his deck, which changes to focus on Dark Magician while maintaining a strategy to disrupt and disable his opponent’s cards.  Later additions to his deck include Dark Magician Girl, Buster Blader, Big Shield Gardna, the Magnet Warriors, Gadgets, and Level monsters, all of which combine powers and grow over time, and the Chaos Monsters, who are renowned for their power; he also exchanges his Celtic Guardian and Gaia the Fierce Knight for Obnoxious Celtic Guardian and Swift Gaia the Fierce Knight.

After separating from Yami, Yugi also separated his decks.  He now has a deck devoted to his Warrior-type monsters, based around his Gaia the Fierce Knight cards including the newly-released Gaia Knight, the Force of Earth (a Synchro Monster) and Gaia Dragon, the Thunder Charger (an Xyz monster), and empowered by various equipment spells; a Silent/Toy deck that he used against both Yami Bakura and Yami Yugi that utilizes Silent Swordsman, Silent Magician, the Gadget monsters, and Gandora, the Dragon of Destruction; and, of course, his Dark Magician/Spellcaster deck, which is considered his signature deck that he uses against the most powerful opponents.

Yugi later learned that he is both the reincarnation and the descendant of Pharaoh Atem.  He lives in Domino City, Japan, with his mother and grandfather, Solomon, above his grandfather’s store, Kame Game.  His father is away on business.

Pharaoh Atem/Yami Yugi (deceased) Edit

Yami yugi

Yugi’s alter-ego (often called Yami Yugi or the Pharaoh)

Joseph “Joey” Wheeler Edit

Wheeler, joey

One of Yugi’s best friends (and a rival duelist), he and Tristan have been best friends since childhood.

After Atem passed on, Joey, Téa, and Tristan teamed up to challenge Yugi to a friendly duel.  Yugi’s skills were offset by the multiple opponents, and the three of them were able to work together to claim victory.  When Joey challenged Kaiba to their third duel, he was able to put up a good fight before he was defeated.

Since beginning in Duelist Kingdom, Joey has come even farther than Yugi has and is now considered one of the greatest duelists in the world, albeit far behind Yugi and Seto Kaiba.  Like Yugi, after the Pharaoh moved on, Joey separated his decks – he now runs a deck comprised of mostly Warrior and Beast-Warrior type monsters, with a variety of gambling spell and trap cards – that much more frequently than not pay off for him – for support, and a Dragon deck based around Red-Eyes Black Dragon, Thousand Dragon, and Alligator’s Sword Dragon.

Téa Gardner Edit

Gardner, tea

One of Yugi’s best friends (and his love interest), Téa Gardner is also a student at Domino High School and currently works as a restaurant waitress, but aspires to be a professional dancer when she grows up.

After Atem passed on, Joey, Téa, and Tristan teamed up to challenge Yugi to a friendly duel.  Yugi’s skills were offset by the multiple opponents, and the three of them were able to work together to claim victory. She also had a rematch against Mai Valentine (which she lost), and dueled against Weevil Underwood, one of Yugi’s rivals, whom she barely managed to defeat at the last minute.

While not as good as Yugi or Joey, Téa is nonetheless a competent duelist.  Her deck consists largely of Fairy-, Spellcaster-, and female monsters, with various spell and trap cards for support.  Among the most prominent members of her deck are Dark Magician Girl, Maha Vailo, Gemini Elf, and Magician of Faith.  She also uses Seiyaryu, a powerful Dragon-type monster card.

Tristan Taylor Edit

One of Yugi’s best friends, he and Joey have been best friends since childhood.

After Atem passed on, Joey, Téa, and Tristan teamed up to challenge Yugi to a friendly duel.  Yugi’s skills were offset by the multiple opponents, and the three of them were able to work together to claim victory.

When it comes to Duel Monsters, Tristan is nowhere near as good or experienced as Yugi, Joey, or even Téa.  He knows how to play the game, and uses a Machine deck with the same Gadget monsters used by Yugi (the Red, Green, and Yellow Gadgets, along with Stronghold the Moving Fortress), and his strongest card is Barrel Dragon.

Seto Kaiba Edit

The majority shareholder and CEO of his own multinational gaming company, KaibaCorp, Seto Kaiba is the reigning Duel Monsters world champion and is considered the second best player in the world, behind his archrival, Yugi Mutou.

At a young age, Kaiba’s parents died and his relatives ran off with their inheritance, leaving him and his younger brother Mokuba at an orphanage.  While visiting the orphanage as a publicity stunt, the head of KaibaCorp, Gozaburo Kaiba was challenged by Seto to a game of chess – when Seto won, Gozaburo reluctantly adopted both brothers as part of the bet.

Under Gozaburo’s tutelage, Seto became a business prodigy, which led him to hostilely take over KaibaCorp.  With KaibaCorp under his control, he shifted its economic interest from the manufacturing of weapons of mass destruction to gaming-oriented equipment, including the creation of Kaiba Land, an amusement park for orphaned and underprivileged children, and holographic technology to heighten the experience of playing Duel Monsters.

After Atem passed on, Kaiba challenged Yugi for his title of King of Games, believing that it was the spirit of the Millennium Puzzle who’d beaten him in the past.  However, Yugi proved to be a worthy opponent and the duel ended in a draw.  He also dueled against Joey Wheeler for the third time, and once again walked away with a victory.

When dueling, Kaiba uses a Duel Monsters deck well known for the Blue-Eyes White Dragon.  At first, his deck is composed of high-powered monsters designed to overwhelm his opponents, with Magic and Trap cards supplementing his Monsters by disabling his opponent.  He later began to streamline his dragons, using them as his powerhouse monsters instead of random, powerful monsters.  His signature card is the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, and his most powerful cards are the Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon and the Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon.

Ryou Bakura Edit

A friend to Yugi, Joey, Téa, and Tristan, Bakura spent many of their adventures under the influence of the evil spirit of the Millennium Ring.  He was freed from the spirit when the Pharaoh Atem (the spirit of Yugi’s Millennium Puzzle) destroyed Zorc Necrophades.

Bakura duels with a Flip Effect/Beatdown combination deck, using the weaker monsters with flip effects to clear the field for his big hitters to come in and deal damage.

Dr. Solomon Mutou, Ph.D. Edit

Yugi’s grandfather, Solomon Mutou is a retired archaeologist who now owns and operates Kame Games, Domino City’s premier comic book and game store.  It was he who gave Yugi the Millennium Puzzle all those years ago, and it was he who got Yugi interested in Duel Monsters.

Duke Devlin Edit

The creator of the Dungeon Dice Monsters game, Duke is also a fairly decent Duel Monsters duelist.

Serenity Wheeler Edit

Joey Wheeler’s younger sister

Mokuba Kaiba Edit

Seto Kaiba’s younger brother, the Vice President and 2% shareholder of KaibaCorp, Mokuba idolizes his big brother, but has also become friends with Yugi Mutou.

Like his brother, Mokuba is also a duelist, although he’s still young and doesn’t have anywhere near the experience that Seto does.  With his brother’s permission (and with many of his cards), Mokuba utilizes an Anti-Dragon Deck, designed to weaken and destroy Dragon cards.  His strongest monster is Buster Blader, and his trump card is Sword of Dragon’s Soul.

Mai Valentine Edit

A beautiful and powerful duelist, Mai Valentine has long been a friendly rival to both Yugi and Joey.

After Atem passed on, Mai challenged Yugi to a duel.  However, her Harpie Ladies were no match for Yugi’s newly-created but powerful Warrior deck. She also had a rematch against Téa Gardner, who was no match for the champion-level duelist.

Mai’s favorite card is Harpie Lady, and her entire deck is based around that card, including but not limited to Harpie Lady, Cyber Harpie, Harpie Queen, Harpie’s Brother, and Harpie’s Pet Dragon.  She also has a second deck centered around the Amazoness cards.

The creator of Duel Monsters and CEO of Industrial Illusions, Maximillion Pegasus is the former holder of the Millennium Eye.

After Atem passed on, Pegasus bequeathed a complete set of Exodia the Forbidden One cards to Yugi Mutou, who lost his original copies on the way to Duelist Kingdom.

Pegasus uses a Toon deck based around the Magic card “Toon World”.

Weevil Underwood Edit

One of Yugi Mutou’s and Joey Wheeler’s longtime rivals, Weevil Underwood is a regional champion duelist.  He is also friends with Rex Raptor, a friendship based on their rivalries with Yugi and Joey.

After Atem passed on, Weevil dueled Yugi’s friend, Téa Gardner; despite leading most of the duel, Téa managed to come from behind at the last minute and snatch a victory.

Weevil uses an Insect deck, which concentrates on swarming the field and powering up his weaker monsters with Equip Spells.

Rex Raptor Edit

One of Yugi Mutou’s and Joey Wheeler’s longtime rivals, Rex Raptor is a regional champion duelist.  He is also friends with Weevil Underwood, a friendship based on their rivalries with Yugi and Joey.

After Atem passed on, Rex challenged Yugi to a duel, but despite an early lead, Yugi managed to defeat Rex with little problems using his newly-created but powerful Warrior deck.

Rex uses a Dinosaur deck designed to crush his opponent’s life points.

Mako Tsunami Edit

One of Yugi Mutou’s and Joey Wheeler’s longtime rivals, Mako Tsunami is on much better terms with Yugi and Joey than some of their other rivals.

A fisherman, Mako uses a deck based around the Legendary Ocean Field Spell card.

Rebecca Hawkins Edit

A young girl with a crush on Yugi, Rebecca Hawkins has come a long way since her first duel against the King of Games.

Bandit Keith Howard Edit

Previously the American Duel Monsters Champion
